Yosua 1:13

1:13 “Remember what Moses the Lord’s servant commanded you. ¹  The Lord your God is giving you a place to settle and is handing this land over to you. ²

11:23 Joshua conquered ³  the whole land, just as the Lord had promised Moses, ⁴  and he assigned Israel their tribal portions. ⁵  Then the land was free of war.

[1:13]  ¹ tn Heb “remember the word which Moses, the Lord’s servant, commanded you.”

[1:13]  sn This command can be found in Deut 3:18-20. In vv. 13-15 Joshua paraphrases the command, as the third person reference to Moses in v. 14 indicates.

[1:13]  ² tn Heb “is providing rest for you and is giving to you this land.”

[1:13]  sn “This land” refers to the trans-Jordanian lands allotted to these tribes.

[11:23]  ³ tn Heb “took.”

[11:23]  ⁴ tn Heb “according to all which the Lord said to Moses.” The translation assumes this refers to the promise of the land (see 1:3). Another possibility is that it refers to the Lord’s instructions, in which case the phrase could be translated, “just as the Lord had instructed Moses” (so NLT; cf. also NIV “had directed Moses”).
